My Babette's blanket

My friend Barbabra and I had a crochet play date! Barbara teaches at The Point in NYC and all over the country. You can catch her at Stitches East this Fall! I love to knit. Crochet has been used by me to add edging to my knitting. I never really took to it as a full "thing", but when I saw the Babette's blanket I decided it was worth the effort. I got the magazine from Interweave and realized that the stitches look "familiar," but I needed a refresher! Barbara came to my rescue! The pix will tell it all! Here you can see we are looking for the "just right" crochet hook size. the small sq needs to be only 1&3/4" small!
I am ready to start!

Barbara choosing her weaponsstill looking...

The first one!My first small square!!! (2 rounds). So, ok, I need practice...
Barbara left me with very clear explanations and I am on my way. 50 2 round sq, 49 4round sq, 16 6round sq, 7 8round sq, 2 10round sq, 2 12 round sq- but who's counting... Barbara showed me a marvelous way to crochet in the ends when you change colors, which will be a great help!
We had a marvelous time! Barbara made a wonderful project bag for me to store my squares!
and I am on my way...

I am looking forward to seeing what your colour sense does with that yarn regardless of the tool you use.

I read on a blog (sorry, forgot which one) that The Ripple blanket and the Babette blanket are getting knitters to start crocheting. I looks like she's right :-) I love knitting, but when I started crocheting, I fell in love with that technique too. I gives a lot more opportunities to know both techniques. I'm looking forward to seeing your blanket :-)

And thanks for the hug - and I'm very glad to hear that knitting has positive physiological effects on the body :-)

Your crochet looks pretty good to me. I know the basics of crochet, but I haven't done anything other than a simple scarf when I was fifteen and some edges and sides here and there now.

Thanks!

Love those yarnboxes! great colours... So difficult to crochet. I bought the Interweave crochet magazine, and it looks simple but somhow I have a a new found respect for a square like that. I must say impressive.

Looking good so far. I was late to the crochet fold too, but it's so useful and pretty.

I loved your idea for a belt for my black cardigan. Thank you!

Oh, I so much want to make also a Babette blanket. My problem is not only the crochet and all those thousand threads to sew in, my first big problem is to choose the colours. I have a lot of sock yarn remnants and when I saw your first square I love so much that you are using variegated yarn, too. Now I am so much looking forward to see more of your patches.

Forgot to say: Love your boxes for your yarn, they look so very neat and well-ordered. Just perfect to find always exactly the yarn you´ll need.

I agree that your boxes of yarn do look sumptuous before they're even crocheted up. I do love the Babettes blanket but I think that may be too big a project to start learning crochet with - maybe a Babettes cushion cover would have to do!
